   KID   FOOD   WISE

Q:  At parties and holidays all the kids want is junk food. Is there a healthy answer to junk food parties?

A:  Yes and no. We've all been to parties with plenty of "junk" food. You can't expect your kids to be different from their playmates and eat only healthy foods all the time. The key here is moderation.

By saying no junkfood..this will usually make them sneak it, and eat it when you're not around.
Explain how sugar foods can damage their beautiful little teeth, and have them rinse & swish with water
as soon as possiable and brush their teeth. By instilling this personal hygiene habit you will plant a seed of awareness. This will enable them to think about what they are putting into their mouth.

Q:  My son  is seven years old. He was just diagnosed with type1 diabetes.   He is not overweight, in fact he is underweight. I'm concerned with the diet his doctor gave him he will lose even more weight. What can I do to keep him eating healthy and  stay strong?

A: Type 1 diabetes is not usually from weight. It is more genetic. Ask your doctor about flax-seed oil.
Foods high in fiber like whole grains, and complex carohydrates with a low glycemic index. A good alternative to sugar is Stevia or XYLITOL both are a natural sweetner with a very low glycemic index. You can make healthy, and delicious desserts and drinks with these  products.  They are available in regular supermarkets or healthfood stores. Check  on the internet for Stevia or XYLITOL recipes. (overusing these products can cause digestive upsets...use moderation)

Q:  I can not get my  four year old to eat vegetables at all ,should I be worried she's not getting the nutrition she needs?

A:  This is a fairly common situation for parents.A really good article I read was, "The sneaky Mommy"
This inventive mom snuck in pureed vegetables into her childrens favorite foods, like macaroni & cheese, pizza, even in peanut butter and honey sandwiches.
Don't make eating veggies a tug of war...eating is enjoyable as well as functional for health and development.Let the little ones help you be creative and pick veggies they will eat. Also try putting the veggies in the blender with fresh fruit juices...keep in mind it doesn't take alot to be nutritious, small little bites add up.

Q: Does all the food we eat have to be organic to be nutritious?

A:   No, there is good nutrition in regular whole foods. Organic means no chemical components in the soil or sprayed on the plants.Of course organic is the highest quality pure foods we can consume however,   sometimes it's not practical or convenient. What is important is washing all fresh fruits and vegetables before preparing or eating them.Having your own vegetable garden is the very best source, certified organic is next. Check the source. Alot of products on the market claim, all natural, organic, pure, etc.not necessarily so.
Q:  How do I know if my child has food allergies?

A:  Even though it's possiable to be allergic to just about any food, over 90 percent of food allergies, especially in young children, are caused by nine foods: dairy products, soy, shellfish, wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, egg whites, citrus fruits, and food additives. In most cases a carefully done elimination diet will uncover what the allergy is from. In severe cases skin tests and blood tests may be needed.

Q:  I'm reading alot lately about children getting enough water for digestion.   I'm having a hard time getting my child to drink plain water, what can I do?

A:  Try giving only pure water to your child when they are truly thirsty. This will increase their desire and taste for water. Also, do remember most fruits and vegetables contain a large percent of water. All liquids contribute in the aid of digestion. Cut back on sweet fruit juice by adding half water to dilute the sweet taste.
